Extreme Jato Project

  • New ERA:
  • New ERA:
  • New ERA:
  • New ERA:
  • New ERA:
Assembly OS18 TZ on to Traxxas Jato, I have seen a picture of Jato with a .21 racing engine before in Internet forum, but I won't be able to modify like that so I choose OS 18TZ.
Parts being used list is here:
  • Team Integy: 3 Piece Clutch Conversion for Revo
  • OS Speed: Tuned Silencer T-1040 (L52)
  • OS Speed: Exhaust Manifold for 18TM Revo
  • Traxxas: Sway Bar Kit (Front and Rear)
  • Traxxas: Aluminum Rods Kit
  • New ERA: Alloy Wheelie Bar
  • New ERA: Alloy Front Bumper
  • New ERA: Alloy Front Lower Arm
  • New ERA: Alloy Rear Lower Arm
  • New ERA: Alloy Front Knuckle Pair

I'm much expecting good performance from OS18TZ, they said that OS18TZ was one of the fastest motor among small block nitro engines. I also have 18TZ EB Fully Modified, I'll make a comparison report of performance 18TZ vs EB mod.

There is Integy made clutch shoes with a flywheel on 18TZ. I tried to install clutch shoes which transferred from Savage, but Jato clutch bell inner diameter didn't match with the shoes, also tooth size of Jato clutch bell is different against clutch bells for Revo, Savage or any nitro 1/8 buggies, therefore it's not sharable.

The 18TZ has been installed on to Jato. Because the tuned pipe is touched an under guard as well as a body shell, the under guard is disassembled also body shell is cut away. OS 203 air cleaner is put on the motor, and the cleaner is also touched with the body, so again body is cut away.

  1. This is great. I have been looking to do this on my jato. I already have the 18tz motor, and learned that the flywheel from the 2.5 engine does not fit the shaft of the 18tz engine.

  2. Thanks for your comment Jay, I also tried to leave my comment on your blog but I couldn't do that somehow... Anyhow hope the 18TZ is put on and run with your Jato successfully...

  3. Hey dude, did you grind down the shaft like the instructions at: http://monster.traxxas.com/showthread.php?t=306708&highlight=TZ+install

I'm in the middle of the install :)

  4. Hey mate, I ground down the nut but didn't do for the shaft, this is why my Jato's clutch-bell and the spur-gear didn't mesh perfectly, even though my Jato runs without problems anyway.

Because the 18TZ thread on the shaft is longer than other OS motors, it needs to modify some parts to make the motor position rather back than normal one. so I think the instructions are correct indeed.

For the same reason, I also installed the 18TZ onto the REVO with the 3Racing made motor mount which can move back the motor position.

    Thank you...

  5. I ended up having to do the shaft for the jato. It took over two hours of trial and error to get it correct.

I get the bump/starter box tomorrow. I can't wait to get this thing started.

  6. Well done mate "congratulations". In my case, it was difficult to start the engine because the flywheel diameter is rather small, so a starter box' wheel and the flywheel weren't well clutched also the piston/sleeve are very tight at the very beginning...

Hope you enjoy the 18TZ and Jato... Cheers

  7. I finally got it running for a long time today. Bump starting became a lot easier with the duratrax starter that i bought once i got the pegs in place. The engine on the jato is WAY too powerful, but fun to have none the less :).

Time to figure out how to relocate the battery compartment to the front to reduce wheelies. ;)

  8. Hello mate, it's a really good idea to relocate the battery to the front as I did such thing on my Revo, it made front flip smaller... Cheers Shige
